This has got to be one of the most frustrating situations you could find yourself in. Your car won’t start. So what should you do about it? We have compiled a list of common causes.

No Crank, No Start

You’ve turned your key in the ignition but the engine won’t turn over or crank.

Common Causes

  • Flat battery

  • Bad starter motor

What To Do

The first thing you should try when your car won’t start is to jump-start your car. If your car starts after it’s been jumpstarted then the cause of the problem is a flat battery. If that’s the case you should ask a mechanic to check that your battery is okay and if not you may need to purchase a new battery. You should do this as soon as possible.

If however your car won’t start after trying a jumpstart, then the problem may be the starter motor or a fault with the engine. Either way, you will need to see a mechanic for professional advice.

Crank, No Start

You’ve turned your key in the ignition, the engine cranks over but it still doesn’t start.

Common Causes

  • Empty fuel tank

  • Blocked fuel filter

  • Blocked fuel lines

  • Degraded spark plugs

What To Do

If the problem is not an empty fuel tank, it’s likely that you’ll need to replace a faulty part in order to start your car. In this situation it’s best to call roadside assistance or tow your car to the nearest mechanic as it will require further expert diagnosis to identify the cause of the problem.
